The year 2005/06 will go down in Benton County history as a time of "peaceful revolution" by the people. The people of Benton County, for the first time in modern
history, have exercised their power of freedom of speech, freedom of press, and public protest in publicly opposing tyrants in local government.
Six county
commissioners have appealed to the Attorney General for an investigation into the
corrupt government of Mayor Jimmy Thornton. Private individuals have filed legal
actions against County Mayor Thornton, Sheriff Cecil Wells as well as other local
officials.
About 1500 citizens have signed petitions against the building of a
prison in downtown Camden. Momentum going into the elections of 2006 appear to be
for removal of most sitting county officials. The people of Benton County are
determined to see the fight for good government completed at the ballot box.
The
people are fed up with irresponsible, corrupt government and the people are in the
process of reclaiming the power that rest with the people under the Constitution of the United States of America. Stay tuned as the people of Benton County march to
victory. By James L. Peach, Sr.
